5 reasons to buy in Bermondsey now

There are fabulous warehouse conversions, where once there were jam, biscuit or leather factories, in a stunning River Thames location. And with arguably the best street food in London, there’s plenty going for it. But why, in particular, should you add Bermondsey to your property-search favourites in 2019? 1. It’s a foodie’s fantasy  

According to the Sunday Times, Bermondsey residents are foodies by definition. Maltby Street Market, started by ex-Borough Market regulars, has certainly been a success story, supplying residents with artisan coffee, Taiwanese waffles and homemade pesto since it opened in 2010.  

So much so that it’s been joined by the Spa Terminus. This Saturday morning market on an industrial estate includes the likes of Monmouth Coffee, Neal’s Yard Dairy, the Ice Cream Union and farmhouse cheesemaker, Kaseswiss.  

There’s a good choice if you’re eating out, from Jose Pizarro’s Spanish restaurant and tapas bar to French favourites Casse-Croûte and Pique-Nique. There are plenty of trendy coffee shops too – try Instagram-ready Hej and the Watch House.

Drinking in Bermondsey offers a choice of bars. There are spruced-up boozers such as The Gregorian, St James of Bermondsey and the Dean Swift. Or peer down Bermondsey’s alleys to find historic gems like the Anchor Tap.  

You’ll also find several microbreweries clumped together in the railway arches – the so-called Bermondsey Beer Mile makes for a perfect craft beer crawl.

2. It’s so well connected

Bermondsey is popular with City workers, and you can see why. You can walk to the City of London in 20 minutes – across Tower Bridge, no less. Otherwise, Bermondsey to Canary Wharf is just four minutes on the Jubilee Line – or 11 minutes to Bond Street. You’re not far from London Bridge with its numerous transport links, either.

3. For its architectural gems

Right by the Thames, Bermondsey grew into a major industrial area in the 19th century. It was home to tanneries and canning factories, not to mention Hartley’s jam and Peek Freans biscuits – the birthplace of the custard cream.  

With the industry gone, the old factories and warehouses have been transformed into loft-style apartment blocks and flexible workspaces, with everything from studios to multi-bedroom penthouses. Beautifully regenerated heritage buildings sit beside stunning modern developments, and the area has its share of pretty Victorian terraces too.

4. It’s lovely for leisure

According to the Times, Bermondsey is, “a compelling neighbourhood that’s keeping its cool head.” The arts scene includes the White Cube gallery on Bermondsey Street, SE1– one of London’s best places to see contemporary work. The tiny independent Kino Cinema is the place to go for classic, arthouse and indie film. Also on Bermondsey Street, you’ll find the Fashion and Textile Museum. Founded by iconic designer Zandra Rhodes, it features a changing programme of exhibitions.

Shad Thames is great for a scenic stroll. Once the largest warehouse complex in London, it’s now an Instagramer’s delight, filled with restaurants, offices, shops and bars.  

If you’re thinking fitness, nothing beats a run alongside the River Thames. Otherwise there’s a PureGym, an Arch climbing wall and outdoor training boot camps in nearby Southwark Park.

5. It’s an education

For primary schools Boutcher CofE, St Joseph’s Roman Catholic, Riverside, Surrey Square and Phoenix are all rated outstanding by Ofsted as are secondaries St Michael’s Catholic College (co-ed), Harris Academy and St Saviour’s and St Olave’s CofE (both girls only).
